I created this thread that centralize all the components to keep when I want to use a functionality or a program in Windows 7.
It's for people (like me) who searched for many times a solution.

This is the topic to end (almost) all topics. Great work! If the community would work together on this we could make RT-7 Lite king!

I think we need to make some distinctions in the terminology. Like UAC is needed for OS security, but if disabling it under Windows 7 has the same effect as removing it with RT-7 Lite, than I don't think we should worry about in this keep list.

And I want to know if someone had an installation issue while removing one of this two services or with both : Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and IPsec Policy Agent.
Because everytime I remove one or the two services, it seems that I can't finish the windows 7 installation.

I never messed with those two, but I am about to conduct some testing using Virtualbox. For that one needs to keep the Intel NIC drivers.

Thanks for your answers.

So I should do more tests to see if it's a Virtualbox problem or if there are another missing components that cause this problem or if it's hardware dependent.

Patozan, I wait for your test. I do my tests the same way (virtualbox) and sometimes I test in a real computer to confirm that the iso is really working.

Great, if you could test with vmware, removing "IPsec Policy Agent" (Service) and if there is an impact on Windows Update.

I think about what you said in the post #8 (ICS already remove) but I want to know if you are doing this under a real machine or vmware.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Patozan,

If you could test everything concerning
[Backup] for the "By Components" section, like :

-> Block Level Backup Engine Service --> I found a problem in Event Log but nothing more.
-> Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider --> I found problem in Event Log but nothing more.
->
Volume Shadow Copy

Test if this not breaks installation or windows functionnality like windows update, or over backup application (Acronis true image, Norton ghost = evaulation for instance), etc...

And if you have any idea with others components that eventually necessary for use Windows 7 Backup.

Thanks.

If removed Error reporting service can cause problems, i got errors trying to play some games, gears of war being one after removing that service.

http://www.rtwincustomize.net/web/index.php?/topic/5590-faultrepdll-missing/

Also i would look through the Rt 7 lite section and see what other members are having problems with, might help narrow some components down for testing.

I will be testing the IPsec tonight.

gor17981,

I forgot to mention that I want to create a Category named [IPsec) and I found that this 2 others Services "Base Filtering Engine", "IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules" are related to IPsec.

So if you should determine if there are any relations between them and if there is an impact on Windows Update.

Many Thanks.

thanks for your work WinterStorm 2050!

does this list incorporate the stuff from the 'What Components Can Be Removed And Should Not Be Removed?' topic?

curious as to why there's 2 topics like this?

I am currently testing the backup section. Should I also test Volume Shadow Copy, or is it clear that it breaks TRIM (I use SSDs too). On more thing, the accessories section needs some work, I think. One problem that may disturb other users is having a broken/non-functional windows interface. I think we should avoid that. For example, if you remove "action center" and "disk cleanup" because you personally don't need them, other users will end up with a broken "Performance Information and Tools" interface. The same thing for Diagnostics Troubleshooting Wizard. Unless we can figure out a way to remove components in a clean way (no broken interface), I would favor a keep list that either includes these components or warns about consequences of removing them. This is also valid for other sections, not just accessories.

So let's get to work!

p.s. as far as I know, Aero Cursors are not needed for Aero Themes functionality. Perhaps we can add a comment on that...

Windows Mail: if you remove it there are two updates unable to install - KB978542 and KB979687

Yeah removing tablet pen also removes snipping tool.

O.k i got an 'unable to install some updates error' after removing IpSec, I used an Original unmodified (apart from that service) version of x64.
There was a whole list of updates for it and i deleted the vM, so couldn't tell you what particular updates did not install  :wallbash:

Hi Patozan,

If you could test everything concerning
[Backup] for the "By Components" section, like :

-> Block Level Backup Engine Service --> I found a problem in Event Log but nothing more.
-> Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider --> I found problem in Event Log but nothing more.
->
Volume Shadow Copy

Test if this not breaks installation or windows functionnality like windows update, or over backup application (Acronis true image, Norton ghost = evaulation for instance), etc...

And if you have any idea with others components that eventually necessary for use Windows 7 Backup.

Thanks.

Ok, I followed you keep list, but removed all services except Vlume Shadow Copy. I wasn't able to install Acronis True Image 2011 using Virtualbox.
